Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts and should be used with caution. They are not a substitute for medical treatment.
⚠️ Important Safety Guidelines:
- External use only in most cases. Do not ingest or take internally unless specifically advised and supervised by a qualified healthcare professional or aromatherapist. Many essential oils are toxic if swallowed.
- Always dilute before applying to the skin. Undiluted essential oils can cause severe irritation, burns, or sensitization. Typical dilution is 1–2% (about 6–12 drops per 30 ml / 1 oz of carrier oil).
- Perform a patch test: Apply a small diluted amount to the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours to check for allergic reactions.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets. Essential oils (especially eucalyptus, tea tree, peppermint, and wintergreen) can be highly toxic to children and animals even in small amounts.
- Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and sensitive areas.
- Photosensitivity: Some oils (especially citrus oils like lemon, bergamot, grapefruit) can cause skin burns or pigmentation changes when exposed to sunlight or UV light. Avoid sun exposure for at least 12–24 hours after application.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or medical conditions: Consult a doctor before use. Many oils are contraindicated during pregnancy (e.g., clary sage, rosemary, pennyroyal) or with conditions like epilepsy, high blood pressure, or hormone-sensitive cancers.
- Storage: Keep in dark glass bottles, away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep tightly sealed.
- Quality matters: Use only pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils from reputable sources. Avoid “fragrance oils” which are synthetic.
If you experience any adverse reaction (rash, dizziness, nausea, breathing difficulty), stop use immediately, wash the area with carrier oil or soap and water (not water alone for skin exposure), and seek medical help if symptoms persist.
This is a general warning only. Individual oils have specific precautions. Always read the label and research the specific oil you are using. When in doubt, consult a certified aromatherapist or healthcare provider.
