About Talking Hat
Talking Hat is a small husband-and-wife business creating natural, ethical products for everyday wellbeing. Based in Mooi River in the beautiful KZN Midlands, we make and source artisan soaps, essential oils, soy candles, herbal tinctures and more — all with care, integrity and a deep respect for nature.
Our Story
Talking Hat is us — a husband-and-wife team living and working in Mooi River in the KZN Midlands.
In 2016 we started with pure essential oils and simple bath salts. We were looking for products that felt honest: clean ingredients, no unnecessary additives, and a real connection to the plants they came from. What we found on the shelves often fell short. So we began making and sourcing our own.
Those early batches were small and carefully made. Essential oils chosen for their quality and character. Bath salts blended by hand. Everything was produced in modest quantities with care. The response from local markets and early customers encouraged us to keep going.
In 2018 we expanded into cold-processed soaps — a natural next step in bringing pure, plant-based care into everyday life. Over the years the range has grown to include lotion bars, balms, soy candles, herbal tinctures, facial scrubs, shower fizz and more. Each new product still has to meet the same standard we set from the beginning: natural, ethical, and genuinely useful.
The name “Talking Hat” carries a quiet nod to the idea that nature has its own language — one that speaks through scent, texture, and simple daily rituals. Living and working in the Midlands has only deepened that belief. The landscape here reminds us daily that good things take time, patience, and respect for the raw materials we work with.
Today Talking Hat remains a small, hands-on business run by the two of us. We still produce and source with care. We still prioritise wholesome ingredients. And we still believe that the best products are the ones that feel good to use and good to stand behind.
